The
U: A Language of Regeneration
by Zaid Hassan
One of the co-leaders of the "Solving
Tough Problems" module reflects on his personal
understanding of the U-process, which has
revolutionized thinking about strategy and
innovation.
"To those who access their own insight regularly,
be they scientists, social entrepreneurs or
indigenous healers, the U-Process puts words
to something very familiar and even traditional.
To those who access insight only sporadically,
the U-Process offers a route to developing
a conscious practice. Used in the context
of groups, the U-Process is a way for the
group to access its collective intelligence
or wisdom." |

The
Roots of Conflict:
Conversation with Michelle LeBaron
by Lyn Hartley
An acclaimed writer,
teacher and specialist in cross-cultural conflict
resolution, Michelle LeBaron will be leading
the core module "Culture & Creativity:
Navigating the Deep Waters of Organizational
Life" at the 2005 Summer Program. In
this interview, she tells us about her approach,
interests, and work.
"Through my intercultural work, I have learned
that difficult conflicts tend to be rooted
in differences of identity, perceptions, and
meaning-making, and thus are not easily addressed
through rational, linear means."

Peace,
and the Practice of Peace
by Harrison Owen
"Looking at the surrounding faces, it was
apparent that most people could not figure
out whether they were attending a funeral
for the company or the opening rounds of civil
war." |

Street
Retreat
by Marc Barasch
Zen Roshi Bernie Glassman, founder
of Greyston Bakery (see
Fieldnotes, issue 4), also initiated a
gritty meditation practice called the "street
retreat." Author/artist Marc Barasch tells
the story of his search for compassion on
the streets of Denver.
"The retreat rules were simple enough: Hit
the streets unbathed and unshaven, without
money or change of clothes, joining for the
better part of a week the ranks of those who
life had kicked to the curb." |

Think
for Yourself: On Creativity, Structural Tension,
and the Work of Robert Fritz
by David Holt
In this article reprint, Progress Halifax
magazine editor David Holt tells about his
experience in Robert Fritz's module last summer.
"People often think there are only two options:
a command and control hierarchy, which tends
to get out of touch with employees and markets,
and at the other extreme a self-organizing
approach. But if you let companies self-organize,
they split into competing factions. There
is a third type of organization that people
don't know enough about; it could be called
compositional, like an orchestra, where the
parts are organized to reinforce each other
around central themes."

The
Business of Saving the World
by Elizabeth Debold
The first instalment of a sweeping assessment
of the critical role of large corporations
in tipping our planetary future towards destruction
or transformation. The article, reprinted
from the current issue of What
Is Enlightenment magazine, is based on
30 interviews, some of which took place at
the 2004 Authentic Leadership Summer Program.
"Inside and outside of these [multinational]
organizations, there is a growing appreciation
of the effects of corporate activity on the
planet and its people, a dawning recognition
that we are one humanity inhabiting one world.
What if these gargantuan entities, filled
with the creative potential of thousands of
human beings, were to awaken to this new global
reality?" |

From
Knowledge to Wisdom
by Julio Olalla
"If knowledge creates silos and divisions,
wisdom integrates. If knowledge is knowing
about it,
wisdom is being
it."

The
Living Baby and the Mechanical Bathwater
by Art Kleiner
How can we avoid falling into a false dichotomy,
where "living interventions are always good,
and mechanistic interventions are always
bad. Or vice versa."? Art invites Fieldnotes
readers to respond with their own experience
and reflections.

Touchstones
by Judy Brown
Five ideas that increase the likelihood of
our working together productively.
"Today, like every other day, we wake up empty
and frightened. Don't open the door to the
study and begin reading. Take down a musical
instrument." Rumi |

Why Fieldnotes? This newsletter arose
from the inspiration to make visible what is otherwise invisible
the rich field of connection, dialogue, and activity that
is arising around the Institute's Authentic Leadership programs.
This field now extends far beyond the programs themselves, in both
time and place. This newsletter also provides a forum for people
who are pioneering the emerging field of what could be called "authentic"
or "transformative" leadership. It is published periodically, September
through April.
We'd like to hear from you. The editorial team invites your feedback,
letters, and submissions. We are especially interested to hear how
you have been applying your learning and insights in your own field
of work. The submission deadline for each issue is the 15th of the
previous month. We reserve the right to edit for clarity and space.
Please include your daytime contact information. We
look forward to hearing from you.
Fieldnotes Team: Susan Szpakowski, Lyn Hartley, Masud Sheikh, Dinah
